The afternoon sun begins to set as Julia, Daniel and Mar\u00eda play in the fields surrounding their home outside Asunci\u00f3n, Peru. Their life is simple and sweet, and they like it that way.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n

Her mother, Luz, says life didn't always feel like this. For six years, his family was unable to live in their home because their community of San Isidro, high in the mountains of Peru, had no drinking water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00ab"We had built this house, but there was no water in the community," says Luz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Until San Isidro had access to improved water services, Luz decided that she and her three children would live with her sister, especially since Luz's husband is often out of town for work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00ab"It was difficult!" she said. "There was no room for the children, and we were closer to a road, so it was dangerous for the children."\u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Community members in San Isidro formed a JASS and together advocated for a water system. Finally, the water system was completed, and Luz and her children were able to move into their house. They were so excited.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Luz says the children are safer and happier here, there is space for them to run and play. And best of all, they have water when they need it and even a new bathroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Luz and others in the community attended training on the safe use of water and sanitation services, ensuring water is safe to drink, maintain toilets, and practice good hygiene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00ab"Before the training for families, nobody knew or practiced these things," he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eleazar Narro is one of the JASS directors on the San Isidro community water committee, which played an important role in managing the construction of the new system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00abWe were all so happy when we finished the water system,\u00bb Eleazar said. \u00abThey celebrated and had a party. They were saying, \u2018Now with water in our homes, we don\u2019t need to walk to carry it anymore!'\u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eleazar says saving time each day has allowed families, like Luz, to spend more time together and take better care of their fields and livestock. With improved water and sanitation services, everyone in the San Isidro community is happier and healthier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
