Wilmer: our goal is to achieve total water coverage

"A town with well-nourished children, with better future possibilities and quality basic services, is an advanced town, which is clear that progress begins with water and health."

As of June 2016, the municipality of Asunción (Cajamarca) carried out the district diagnosis of drinking water coverage. 90.7% of the families in the district had drinking water in their homes and 368 families were identified as lacking the service. The district of Asunción is close to achieving Total Water Coverage.

"The diagnosis of drinking water systems that we do year after year with Water For People helps us know how much progress we have made in the district provision of drinking water and what is missing to achieve the sustainability of the processes," Wilmer mentions.

For Wilder Tarrillo, Deputy Municipal Manager of Social Development, talking about Total Coverage Forever in the provision of rural water and sanitation services means strengthening the actors who make it possible for drinking water systems to provide a quality service. to families.

"For this 2016, we have 51 JASS in the district, 49 of them provide water service between 15 to 24 hours a day and have zero arrears. Regarding the reporting of residual chlorine, so far we have managed to get 22 JASS to adopt this good practice "We municipal authorities have learned that any achievement requires committed effort and hand-in-hand work with the villages, local authorities and allies committed to district development such as Water For People."

Headed towards our goal

The Deputy Manager continues his story and talks about the World Bank's visit to Asunción. Representatives of this important entity came to learn firsthand about the district's progress in water and sanitation.

Having caught the attention of the World Bank, says Wilmer, confirms that our purpose is on track: "as promoters of local development, we seek to be a benchmark district in water and sanitation, with Sanitation Services Administrative Boards (JASS) that are better organized and prepared for the good management of rural water and sanitation services. Another goal is to eradicate chronic childhood malnutrition in the district and to achieve this, we must first have a quality drinking water service.

It is important to convey the message about the importance of drinking water in communities, water chlorination and its importance for health. The people must internalize that drinking water also reduces chronic child malnutrition; That is where, for the local government, lies the importance of achieving Total Coverage Forever in water, says Wilmer.
